Why Therapy?

Mental health is a very sensitive and taboo topic, which causes the necessary services such as therapy to be frowned upon in some households due to religious, cultural or personal beliefs. Without shedding light on the importance of at least talking about mental health, our communities and our families will continue to suffer. We as human beings generally experience trauma and many life changing events, we internalize and suppress our personal feelings, and we face challenges in our relationships. We, as a community, must eliminate the stigma behind going to therapy and engaging in other healing practices and make it okay to talk about how different factors have an impact on our mental well-being and overall functioning. There is power in vulnerability! Being vulnerable allows you to connect to your authentic self not only to foster positive change in your life, but to be the best YOU that you can be, for yourself and your loved ones.

We are all conditioned. Conditioned by our parents, by society, by educational systems, and by religious institutions. We are conditioned to be who others want us to be based on what they think is right. But how can they know what's right for everyone? We are all unique individuals with our own purpose in this life. Perhaps we've conditioned ourselves with negative self-talk, self-doubt, self-criticism and judgment. Is this the trauma talking? It might be. Detaching from conditioned beliefs and stepping into alignment with self is where you begin to live your authentic life and walk into your authentic self, free of criticism, judgment, or just anyone telling YOU how YOU should be. Only you have lived your experiences. Many people think therapy is to "fix you". This is false; because first, there is nothing wrong with you. Secondly, in therapy, you talk free of judgement and you learn free of criticism. Therapy is a safe haven to grow; and let's face it, your cousin, your sister or your friends won't always give the education, care, attention and judgment free insight that you may need. To talk through your experiences, talk through your moods and talk through your problems to find valuable solutions; talking helps. Not only does talking help, it reduces mental strain, anxiety, and depression by allowing you to feel HUMAN. It allows you to unlearn unhealthy and toxic beliefs, while you learn healthy habits, self-care, communication, and overall heal from your past experiences that have geared you into survival mode. Mental health is necessary to live a fulfilling life that includes alignment, inner peace and genuine joy. We need to break the stigma of mental health support for the sake of humanity's future. Given the effects of the pandemic and global travesties, we are ALL not okay - and that is okay. However, if we are not okay, we've already failed our children. Let's get our kids talking and learning about mental health too. It can potentially save their lives. Our children deserve a fighting chance at this life and they need the safe space to grow, develop and find purpose. Let's end the stigma behind therapy - together!
